Policosanol – The Cholesterol-Lowering Supplement
نویسنده
چکیده
Daily doses of 10 mg of policosanol have been shown to be equally effective in lowering total or LDL cholesterol as the same dose of simvastatin (Zocor) or pravastatin (Pravachol). At dosages of up to 20 mg per day, policosanol is safe and well tolerated, as studies of >3 years of therapy indicate.” The authors concluded that policosanol seems to be a very promising phytochemical alternative to classic lipid-lowering agents such as the statins and deserves further evaluation. Effects of a policosanol supplement on serum lipid concentrations in hypercholesterolaemic and heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemic subjects.
Policosanol is a mixture of higher aliphatic primary alcohols that is extracted from purified sugar cane wax or a variety of other plant sources, and has been shown to have beneficial effects on serum lipid concentrations. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a policosanol supplement (Octa-60) on lipid profiles of hypercholesterolaemic and heterozygous familial hypercho...
متن کاملPolicosanol Monograph
Introduction Policosanol, an extract from sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.), has been heavily researched in Cuba in several human populations for its cholesterol-lowering properties. In addition to improving serum lipids, policosanol reduces LDL oxidation, decreases platelet aggregation, decreases smooth muscle proliferation, and improves symptoms of cardiovascular disease. Side effects are...
متن کامل¿Does policosanol impairs muscle function of older patients with type II hypercholesterolemia?
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the main cause of mortality in middle-aged and elderly individuals. Clinical studies have shown that lowering total (TC) and lowdensity lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDLC) reduces the frequency of coronary events, so that cholesterol-lowering drugs are indicated to prevent CHD. Myopathy and rabdomyolysis are adverse experiences (AE) associated to the use of these drug...
متن کاملComparison of the effects of policosanol and atorvastatin on postmenopausal women with type II hypercholesterolemia
Postmenopausal women show elevated serum low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), and low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) compared with premenopausal women, and to control their dyslipidemia means to lower LDL-C levels. Policosanol (5 to 20 mg/d) is an effective cholesterol-lowering agent, and atorvastatin (10 80 mg/d) one of the most efficacious statins...
متن کاملEffects of policosanol and lovastatin on lipid profile and lipid peroxidation in patients with dyslipidemia associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
In this pilot, randomized, double-blind study, we compared the effects of policosanol and lovastatin on lipid profile and lipid peroxidation in patients with dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus. After 4 weeks on a cholesterol-lowering diet, 36 patients were randomized to policosanol (10 mg/day) or lovastatin (20 mg/day) tablets o.i.d. for 8 weeks. Policosanol significantly (p < 0.001) low...
